comprehensivetherapyapproach.com - "With EMDR You Can Do More than Manage Panic, You Can Treat It" | EMDR Therapy | Scoop.it

A recent share by an EMDR client named Amy has inspired this article.  Here is what she said:

I am amazed with my results from EMDR.

Overwhelmed with anxiety and panic on a daily basis, I thought I was out of options. I had been to talk therapy regularly, but with little to no improvement. That all changed when I began seeing my EMDR Therapist. EMDR is successful because it works with your brain; how your brain stores trauma, and the ripple down effects of untreated trauma (ie: anxiety and panic.)

Upon meeting my new EMDR therapist, I was diagnosed with PTSD. My panic attacks were directly related to my PTSD triggers. It was such a relief to hear this diagnosis.

EMDR: Is it for you?

EMDR: Is it for you? | EMDR Therapy | Scoop.it

In doing this, little islands are created in our brains ... isolated neuro-networks ... of old painful memories. Sealed within these memories are childish and inaccurate perceptions and judgments about the events, about who we are, and about life itself. For example, an adult may have isolated memories about the death of a favorite pet from his/her preschool years. These might be stored in the brain along with feelings of anger, sadness, and guilt.

Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

This is a simple explaination of EMDR with an island metaphor for understanding how difficult experiences get separated from the rest of our brain and distort the MAP of how we see ourselves.

WHO | WHO releases guidance on mental health care after trauma

WHO | WHO releases guidance on mental health care after trauma | EMDR Therapy | Scoop.it
WHO is releasing new clinical protocols and guidelines to health-care workers for treating the mental health consequences of trauma and loss.
Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

The World Health Organization has released guidelines for treating PTSD:

  • Types of support offered can include psychological first aid, stress management and helping affected people to identify and strengthen positive coping methods and social supports.
  • In addition, referral for advanced treatments such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) or a new technique called eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) should be considered for people suffering from PTSD. These techniques help people reduce vivid, unwanted, repeated recollections of traumatic events. More training and supervision is recommended to make these techniques more widely available.

PTSD and EMDR - A New Chapter in Healing

PTSD and EMDR - A New Chapter in Healing | EMDR Therapy | Scoop.it

(full post)

As I write this, I remember the original experience and the EMDR experience and yet energetically it has changed for me for the positive.  Through the EMDR I came to understand that the shame and condemnation was not mine to carry.  I was just a little girl and she the parent.  Her job was to teach and lead.  Children don’t have the ability to think through things.  I was a little girl, with a little girl’s brain and a little girl’s body.

I am grateful for the experience of healing through this and while I don’t look forward to going back into the memories, I look forward to reprogramming the brain through EMDR so I am free from the effects and triggers of the memory.
